Nicholas Sparks: The notebook

Meegenomen van de boekgrrls-jubileum-boekenruil op Vlie: The notebook van Nicholas Sparks. Een dun boekje. Ik las het op de eerste vakantiedag in Zuid-Frankrijk in een paar uurtjes weg.

Een oude man schuifelt door een gang op weg naar iemand die huilt. Een vrouw. Is ze stervende? Is ze gehandicapt? Hij begint haar een verhaal voor te lezen. Een erg zoet liefdesverhaal, echt zo zoet dat je je bijna misselijk af wilt wenden. En dat ook nog in zijn geheel is opgenomen in het boek. Maar zet even door, want pas aan het eind begrijp je waarom, als duidelijk wordt wie de man is en aan wie het boek voorgelezen wordt. Dat verklappen is het thema vertellen, zou moeten kunnen, maar toch is het
zonde... Het wordt niet voor niets tot het eind toe niet verteld.

Eindconclusie: mooi boekje.

". . . It wasn't easy to come up with the plot for my first novel, but in the end, I decided to go with something that I knew I could do. But before I go into the writing process, I'd like to tell you a little about the beginning of the story, since it had its roots in something that happened in 1989.

A love story, written in both first and third person narrative, in two different time periods, that tells the story of Noah and Allie; how they fell in love in the 1940s, and how they fall in love again in the 1990s, when Allie is suffering from Alzheimer's and no longer remembers him.
A first novel, of approximately 47,000 words.
