Zaterdag op de markt in Utrecht bij Adri (bekend bij meerdere Domgrrls - hij heeft een kraam met boeken - schuin tegenover de kraam met de lekkerste Turkse brood en olijven en feta) heb ik een 'Collector's Edition' van The Quincunx gekocht voor 2.50. Dit houdt in dat er een 10 pagina nawoord van de schrijver is. Geschreven in 1992 (nawoord dan, boek zelf is van 1989) en vol met fascinerende dingen over hoe hij het boek schreef, de struktuur en motieven enzovoort. Ik heb nu zin om dit boek te herlezen. Een lekker dikke pil (bijna 1200 pagina's).

Er is ongetwijfeld het een en ander over dit boek op internet te vinden - het deed veel stof opwaaien in de boekenwereld toen het uitkwam. Van de blurb:
'A brilliant and deeply eccentric attempt to reproduce an Early Victorian novel [...] The plot is so thick the spoon stands up in it [...] the sort of book that sends you into a trance of pleasure.'

Van het Internet: "The novel is advertised to have been thoroughly researched for, before it was written — and it shows. Mighty work had done the author! The firsthand (essential in the novel) descriptions of the English poor equal that of Dickens (literally and literarily); the analysis of the middle and upper classes equals that of Austen, Tolstoy, Wharton and Huxley. Finally, the historical background is the one that could be very well written by a professional historian. All this suggests that The Quincunxis a rich, serious, textured novel, which fully satisfies the strict requirements of the high-class literary fiction with historical background."
